No Utopia: Film Art and Blockbusters in one and the same Cinema

Every month, with CINEMA OF THE MONTH, Europe‘s Finest presents a European cinema which makes a particular contribution to the world of digital film.

„I see digital cinema as an inevitable development. The positive aspects for me are the well-restored copies and the improved picture quality,“ says Nico Simon, director of the Utopolis cinema group in Luxemburg. In 1983 Simon was one of the founding members of the Utopia programme cinema in Luxemburg. In 1996 Utopolis opened, a multiplex cinema, with him at the helm. Today Utopolis is fully digitally equipped, and three of its five screens are digital.

Both cinemas exist alongside one another, each with a different focus. With current films Utopolis draws the crowds whilst Utopia specialises in arthouse films and film classics. Currently, the cinema is showing LA PISCINE Europe’s Finest.

„In our programming we try to do justice to Luxemburg’s multicultural society,“ explains Sarah Bettendorff, director of programming. The films are frequently shown in the original version with French and Dutch subtitles. Apart form „Utopia Classics“ the cinemas run film festivals focusing on specific countries, sneak previews and a Ciné-Café.
