Women have always played a major part in Bergman’s life: both on the screen, the stage and in private. Some observers have seen this film as an 'early key to his previous female images'. Behind the actors´ masks, it is easy to identify a number of 'team Bergman' members, lead by 'armour cruiser Womanhood' (Bergman´s own term) Eva Dahlbeck, and also Harriet Andersson, Gunnar Björnstrand, to mention a few.
