The first lady of Czech cinema, Vera Chytilová, tells a grotesque tale of two girls who decide to toe the line set by the "decadent" world and act accordingly. Their ensuing escapades, destructive and conducted with a detached sense of irony, form the basis of this movie that is not just a bravura parade of surreal conflicts. Thanks to the director’s ingenious work with colour material, it is also a work of rare visual impact.
